News release: Schürch (Sherk/Shirk) Family Reunion Planned
The biennial reunion and genealogical gathering of the Schürch Family Association of North America will be held at the Niagara–on-the-Lake campus of Niagara College from Thursday, August 9 to Sunday, August 12, 2012. Beautiful scenic Niagara-on-the-Lake is located conveniently close to the Canada/US border at Buffalo, NY and a short drive from Niagara Falls.
An invitation is extended to all persons and families throughout North America who have an ancestral connection or historical interest in the Schürchs in any of its various spellings. Some of the common variations are: Sherk, Sherck, Shirk, Sherick, Sherrick, Sharick, Scherch, Scherck, Scherich, Scherk, Schirch, and Schürch. Other spellings also exist.
Two Nations-One Family is the theme for this celebration of 200 years of peace between Canada and the United States. It coincides with the events commemorating the War of 1812 across Ontario. On the reunion weekend, participants can also attend the re-enactment of the Siege of Old Fort Erie (Aug 11-12) at Fort Erie. A ‘pre-reunion’ winery tour and golfing are planned for Thursday, August 9.
Friday and Saturday historical seminar topics will include Schürch family history, preservation of old photographs, documents etc, Regency fashion, ‘What Schürchs are doing today’, and a presentation on Anabaptists during the War of 1812.
The 1812 Bicentennial coach tour on local history and museums with optional walking tour of Niagara-on-the-Lake is planned for Friday. On Saturday, The Anabaptist Tour helps participants to fully understand the lives of their ancestors during the War of 1812.
Other reunion highlights include opportunities to meet with family genealogists, self-guided tours of ancestral farms and places of interest, activities for children, silent and live auctions, Friday night BBQ, Saturday night banquet with entertainment, and Sunday morning worship service.
A new family association project will be kicked off at the reunion: The Schürch Gallery-promising to be the largest collection of Schürch faces in one place. Sharing old photos for scanning at the reunion is encouraged.
Early registration is recommended, as space is limited for some activities. Guests may come for one day or for the weekend.
